The report Stocktake of Strengths and Weaknesses of the Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 published by the Scientific Analysis and Advice on Gender Equality in the EU project (SAAGE) provides an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the EU Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025, assessing its implementation up to January 2025.

The SAAGE project is coordinated by Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini and funded by the European Commission with the aim to contribute to improving gender equality policies in the EU, and to raise awareness and promote action on gender equality in EU member states.

The report is edited by Elvira Gonzalez Gago and Cristina Castellanos Serrano, experts from the SAAGE network. The main purpose of the stocktake is to draw lessons and formulate recommendations to guide future gender equality policies within the European Union.

The report reviews the five priority areas addressed in the Strategy (eliminating gender-based violence and stereotypes, achieving gender equality in the economy, promoting women’s leadership, integrating gender perspectives across all EU policies, and supporting gender equality globally). For each, the relevance, coherence, effectiveness and EU added value of the Strategy are assessed.

The publication also offers recommendations for the design and governance of a future strategy, emphasising the need to address the interconnected causes of gender inequalities and to respond to emerging challenges such as persistent gender stereotypes and the rise of anti-gender narratives.
