She is Professor of Geography at Birkbeck, University of London. She has been researching paid domestic work in the UK for over 20 years and is author of The Servant Problem: Domestic Employment in a Global Economy (2006, I.B. Tauris) and she recently edited the collection ‘Au Pairs’ Lives in Global Context: Sisters or Servants? (2015, Palgrave Macmillan).



Not all au pairs are exploited, but they do all carry out domestic work in conditions that have been identified as encouraging maltreatment. Recognising them as workers is a first step towards ensuring their fair treatment, but it is only a first step
